Historical Background

The Schwerer Gustav and its sister gun Dora were enormous railway cannons developed by Germany before and during WWII. Weighing over 1,300 tons and mounted on special dual railway tracks, they were capable of firing massive 7-ton shells up to 47 kilometers (29 miles). Dora was deployed in 1942 during the Siege of Sevastopol, where it bombarded Soviet fortifications with devastating effect. Although logistically difficult to transport and assemble, the Dora gun remains one of the most impressive examples of military engineering in history.
